The BJP accused opposition-ruled states like Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Bihar of playing politics over the Manipur incident. A video surfaced on May 4 showing two women being paraded naked by a group of men in Manipur, causing tension in the area.
At a press conference, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur mentioned cases of crimes against women in Rajasthan, Bihar, and West Bengal. He criticized Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, as well as leaders of other opposition parties, for remaining silent on such cases in non-BJP ruled states.
Thakur alleged that over 100,000 cases of crimes against women have been registered in Rajasthan in the last four years, including 33,000 cases of sexual assault. He also mentioned the sacking of Rajasthan minister Rajendra Gudha, claiming that Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot dismissed him for expressing concern about crimes against women and calling for a debate on the issue.
Thakur questioned whether Gehlot would resign when his own minister criticized him for failing to address crimes against women in the state. He also criticized the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, stating that the state is not far behind Rajasthan when it comes to crimes against women.
Thakur accused Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, of lacking compassion and failing to take action against incidents of violence. He mentioned an incident in Howrah where more than 40 supporters of the Trinamool Congress paraded a woman naked during the panchayat polls. Thakur also claimed that a video showing two women being half-naked in Malda, West Bengal has gone viral.
Thakur questioned the absence of action by Mamata Banerjee and the state government in response to these incidents.
