The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes held a public hearing at the Hanumakonda Collectorate on Saturday. Representatives from various backward-class communities and political parties from Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, Mulugu, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally districts attended the event. The Commission received a total of 230 representations during the hearing.
The Commission, led by G Niranjan, is tasked with determining the reservation percentages for backward-class (BC) communities in local governing bodies. This decision will be made after calculating the population percentage of the BC communities.
Speaking to the media, Niranjan highlighted some of the key demands presented at the hearing. One of the main requests was for a 42% reservation in local bodies for BCs, reflecting their population size. There was also a call for special quotas for castes that have never been represented in local bodies.
Another notable demand was the reclassification of castes within the existing BC categories—A, B, C, D, and E. Some communities also asked the Commission to consider moving them to the Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories, citing their difficult socioeconomic conditions.
Additionally, there were appeals for the creation of a BC Atrocities Act to protect backward classes from offenses. The Kula Nirmulana Sangham also submitted a request for ‘No Caste’ certificates and 5% reservations for their community.
Niranjan assured that the Commission would carefully review all the representations and make recommendations to the government based on their findings.
