GHMC Commissioner Orders Sewage System Survey in Yakutpura
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner, K Ilambarithi, has instructed officials to conduct a detailed survey of the sewage system in Yakutpura constituency. On Wednesday, he visited several areas along with Yakutpura MLA Jaffar Hussain Meraj and local corporators to assess the situation.
During his visit, the Commissioner inspected localities such as Rangeli Khidki, Hussain Koti, Maula ka Chilla, Ganga Nagar, Murgi Naala, and Rein Bazar. The first stop was Rangeli Khidki, where he examined sewage overflow problems. Officials informed him that the sewer system in Ganga Nagar, which dates back to the Nizam’s era, has been facing overflow issues for years. In response, he ordered engineering officers to conduct a thorough survey and submit a detailed report on the condition of the drains.
At Maula ka Chilla, the Commissioner inspected the Ganga Nagar drain. The MLA informed him that work had been ongoing for three years and urged the concerned agency to speed up the project. He assured that funding was not a problem and stressed that the work should be completed within the given timeframe. The Commissioner then directed the Zonal Commissioner to take immediate action, as residents were struggling with garbage buildup and water stagnation.
Residents of Rein Bazar complained that the existing box drain system was failing to drain rainwater properly, causing floodwaters to enter their homes. In response, MLA Jaffar Hussain requested the Commissioner to consider a proposal worth Rs 1.60 crore to resolve the issue. The Commissioner instructed the engineering officer to prepare a detailed report on the necessary work.
Commissioner Ilambarithi emphasized that the construction work should be carried out urgently while ensuring minimal inconvenience to residents. He also stressed the need for a comprehensive master plan for drainage development, similar to road development projects. A structured approach, he explained, would help manage Hyderabad’s stormwater drainage system efficiently and prevent future flooding.
He further highlighted that the drainage work was being carried out under the Strategic Nala Development Program (SNDP) to help residents in the Old City. He added that the second phase of the SNDP project, costing Rs 545 crore, is already in the tendering process. Lastly, he urged officials to complete the ongoing drainage work before the next monsoon season to avoid further inconvenience to residents.
