Dr. Pidigam Saidaiah, the principal researcher on this unique fruit, shared that the university has been conducting detailed studies since July. The research includes visiting villages and mandals to gather information from farmers about the special characteristics of the Balanagar variety.

The team has been carefully analyzing the fruit’s area of cultivation, historical significance, and documented evidence. DNA samples have also been collected to study its nutritional and physical traits. Alongside this, efforts are being made to educate farmers on the benefits of obtaining a GI tag for the fruit.

    Unique Traits and Economic Potential

The Balanagar custard apple is known for its distinct qualities and natural growth in the forests of the former Mahabubnagar district. Its commercial cultivation has proven to be a good source of income for farmers. Recognizing this potential, SKLTHU, with financial support from NABARD, has initiated extensive research and data collection for the GI registration process.

Dr. Danda Rajireddy, SKLTHU Vice-Chancellor, revealed that NABARD’s Telangana Regional Office has provided Rs. 12.7 lakh in financial assistance for the project. According to B Uday Bhaskar, Chief General Manager of NABARD Telangana Regional Office, thousands of people benefit from the collection of these custard apples during the months of September, October, and November.

The fruit provides direct employment to around 10,000 people and creates indirect opportunities for another 20,000. Local businesses estimate that the Balanagar custard apple generates approximately Rs. 10 crore in revenue within a span of 45 days.

    Impressive Characteristics

Each Balanagar custard apple tree can produce 8-10 kg of fruits, with some trees yielding up to 15-20 kg. The average fruit weight is 339 grams, ranging from 278 grams to 486 grams. The pulp of the fruit weighs 170 grams, and it contains about 54 seeds weighing 22 grams in total.

    Nutritional Powerhouse

This fruit is a rich source of nutrients. It contains 29.57% carbohydrates for energy, 5.23% crude protein, 5.75% crude fiber, 1.2% crude fat, and 19.42% ascorbic acid. These values are significantly higher compared to other custard apple varieties, making it a highly nutritious choice.

    Boost for Exports

Currently, the Balanagar custard apple is exported to major cities like Vizianagaram and Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, and New Delhi. Securing a GI tag is expected to open doors for international exports, bringing global recognition and greater economic benefits to the region.

With its unique qualities and growing demand, the Balanagar custard apple has the potential to become a signature product of Telangana.
