Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia said that the government told them not to talk about their meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday night. Punia is one of the wrestlers leading the protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the head of the wrestling federation and a BJP MP, who has been accused of sexual harassment. Punia said that they did not have any “setting” with the Home Minister and that he had informed them that an inquiry was being conducted. Despite this, the protest movement will continue, and they are planning their next steps.
Punia responded to allegations that the wrestlers had reached an agreement with the Home Minister and that further protests were unnecessary. He claimed that although the government had instructed them not to talk about their meeting with Amit Shah, they had leaked the information to the media. The athletes are not satisfied with the government’s response, and the government is not agreeing with their demands.
Seven female wrestlers, one of them a minor, have accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment. The wrestlers are calling for an impartial investigation and swift action against him. The meeting with Amit Shah on Saturday night lasted more than an hour and was attended by Punia, Sakshee Malikkh, Sangita Phogat, and Satyawart Kadian. Amit Shah reassured the wrestlers that the law applies equally to everyone.
