A guitar that was smashed on stage by Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, was sold for almost $600,000. The black Fender Stratocaster was signed by all three band members and was broken while Nirvana was working on their album, Nevermind. Cobain had signed the instrument ‘Kurdt Kobain’. The guitar has been put back together but is no longer playable.
The auction house expected the guitar to sell for around $60,000, but it eventually sold for $595,000. Nirvana’s popular songs included ‘Come As You Are’, ‘Lithium’, and ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Cobain struggled with addiction and depression and had a difficult relationship with his wife, Courtney Love.
The three-day auction includes memorabilia from the careers of other musicians such as Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, and Janet Jackson.
