The State Government of Telangana has given administrative approval for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. This new phase will cover a stretch of 76.4 kilometers. The approval was granted on Saturday, marking another major step in the city’s transportation development.
The estimated cost for this second phase is Rs 24,269 crore. To compare, the first phase of the Hyderabad Metro spanned 69 kilometers across three corridors and was completed at a cost of Rs 22,000 crore.
Officials stated that the main aim of the second phase is to meet the growing transportation needs of people from different areas of the city. It also aims to promote balanced development across Hyderabad. Six new corridors have been selected for this expansion.
Phase-II Expansion Corridors:
1. Corridor IV: Nagole to Shamshabad RGIA (Airport Corridor) – 36.8 km
2. Corridor V: Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis – 11.6 km
3. Corridor VI: MGBS to Chandrayangutta (Old City Corridor) – 7.5 km
4. Corridor VII: Miyapur to Patancheru – 13.4 km
5. Corridor VIII: LB Nagar to Hayat Nagar – 7.1 km
6. Corridor IX: Shamshabad RGIA to Fourth City (Skill University) – 40 km
For Corridor IX, officials are still working on the alignment, cost estimates, and other details. Field surveys are currently being conducted for this section. Meanwhile, the remaining five corridors, which total 76.4 kilometers, will cost Rs 24,269 crore.
This project will be a 50:50 joint venture between the Telangana government and the Union government. The Telangana government will contribute Rs 7,313 crore, while the Central government’s share will be Rs 4,230 crore. Additionally, Rs 11,693 crore will be raised through loans from organizations like JICA, ADB, and NDB. There will also be Rs 1,033 crore from public-private partnerships (PPP).
