An explosion occurred at the Escientia Advanced Science company in the Atchutapuram Pharma SEZ, Anakapalle. The tragic incident has claimed 16 lives, and around 50 others have been injured.
The blast took place shortly after 1:30 PM on Wednesday, causing widespread panic and significant damage within the pharma facility. Authorities have noted that the explosion was extremely powerful, leading to the collapse of the first-floor slab, which trapped several workers under the debris.
Emergency services were quick to respond, with 11 fire engines dispatched to the scene. The fire that followed the explosion was swiftly brought under control.
At the time of the explosion, approximately 300 employees were working at the site. The force of the blast was so strong that it was felt in nearby villages, spreading fear among the local community. Five of the injured workers are in critical condition, suffering burns that cover more than 60% of their bodies.
Rescue operations were conducted urgently, with cranes being used to rescue workers from the third floor. All injured individuals have been transported to various hospitals in Anakapalle for emergency medical treatment.
An investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently underway. The death toll may rise as the situation continues to develop.
