Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Guwahati on Friday. He also announced the construction of three more medical colleges in Assam during his visit to the state for “Rongali Bihu.” Additionally, he founded the Assam Advanced Health Care Innovation Institute (AAHII) at IIT-Guwahati and launched a healthcare program that will provide free medical care worth Rs. 5 lakh annually to 11 million beneficiaries.
PM Modi distributed around 11 million AB-PMJAY cards across all districts and gave three representative beneficiaries Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana cards. The AIIMS campus is the only healthcare facility of its kind in the northeastern region and can accommodate 100 medical students each year. The construction of the three medical schools in Nalbari, Nagaon, and Kokrajhar cost Rs. 615 crore, Rs. 600 crore, and Rs. 535 crore, respectively. The AIIMS campus cost Rs. 1,123 crore to construct.
PM Modi outlined the healthcare industry’s progress over the last nine years, accusing previous administrations of neglecting to establish AIIMS units around the country. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, congratulated the prime minister for the state’s development initiatives.
Assam also set a new Guinness World Record for organizing the largest Bihu dance performance at a single venue, with over 11,000 dancers participating.
