The Telangana government is nearing completion of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Phase-2 Water Supply Project. This project aims to provide a reliable drinking water supply to urban areas within the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) limits. It is an important step in addressing the city’s growing water needs.
Strengthening Urban Infrastructure
Along with improving water supply, the state government is also working on a comprehensive drainage system. This system will help manage urban flooding and prevent water stagnation in Hyderabad. To achieve this, the government has approved a ₹5,942 crore Integrated Stormwater Drainage Project. This project will enhance the city’s ability to handle floods and improve drainage efficiency.
While presenting the 2025-26 Budget, Telangana Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka highlighted the need for such initiatives. He stated that Hyderabad is facing increasing water management challenges due to rapid urbanization. These projects aim to provide sustainable solutions for both drinking water supply and flood prevention.
Enhanced Flood Management for Hyderabad
The Integrated Stormwater Drainage Project will focus on:
– Preventing waterlogging in areas prone to flooding.
– Improving drainage efficiency to ensure that rainwater is discharged quickly.
– Enhancing urban resilience by reducing damage to infrastructure and residential areas.
With climate change causing unpredictable rainfall patterns, Hyderabad’s investment in these projects is necessary for sustainable urban growth. The development of stormwater management and water supply infrastructure will help secure water availability and reduce the impact of heavy rainfall. These efforts will make Hyderabad a model city for smart urban planning.
