Telangana’s Green Power Policy is attracting significant investment, with companies pledging between ₹80,000 crore and ₹1 lakh crore to the sector. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka shared this information while speaking in the Legislative Council on Monday. He also highlighted the government’s ambitious plans to expand renewable energy production in the state.
The government aims to boost Telangana’s green energy capacity from the current 8,938 MW to 20,000 MW by 2030 and further to 40,000 MW by 2040. Vikramarka criticized the previous BRS-led government for not taking enough policy initiatives in this sector over the past ten years. He assured that the new administration is implementing reforms to speed up growth.
To encourage investment, the government is making approvals easier through a single-window clearance system. It is also offering additional incentives to companies. Several firms have already signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to formalize their commitments.
One of the key initiatives under this policy is a partnership between the government, women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (GENCO). This project aims to generate 1,000 MW of solar power by leasing vacant lands to SHG members. This will not only help Telangana increase solar power production but also enable SHG members to become entrepreneurs. The State has promised to buy the power they generate. Additionally, efforts are being made to involve young people in the green energy sector, creating more job opportunities.
Telangana has also signed an agreement with Rajasthan for solar power generation, strengthening inter-state cooperation. In addition, the government is promoting electric vehicles (EVs) by waiving taxes on EV registration, leading to a surge in their adoption. Plans are in place to expand EV charging stations along highways, introduce battery-operated buses, and gradually replace diesel-powered public transport. To further encourage the shift, the government has stopped issuing new permits for diesel auto-rickshaws in Hyderabad. Discussions are ongoing about relocating high-emission vehicles beyond the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to reduce pollution.
Vikramarka suggested that if enough MLAs and MLCs show interest, a special session on the Green Energy Policy could be organized. This would allow for more discussions on strategies to ensure sustainable development in Telangana.
