Khammam Railway Station Undergoing Major Transformation
Khammam railway station in Telangana is set for a major upgrade as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The redevelopment work is progressing quickly, and the transformation is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
This station is one of 40 railway stations in Telangana selected for modernization. It falls under the Secunderabad Division and is categorized as a Non-Suburban Grade-3 (NSG-3) station. Located on the Kazipet–Vijayawada section, the station serves around 12,988 passengers daily, generating an annual revenue of ₹29.64 crore. About 83 trains halt at Khammam station, including superfast trains to major cities such as New Delhi, Howrah, Chennai, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Secunderabad, and Tirupati.
Besides serving passengers, the station plays a key role in transporting goods. It is an important hub for coal mines in the nearby Singareni Collieries, which supports local industries like cement, steel, and paper manufacturing.
A Rich Historical Background
Khammam railway station has a long history dating back to the late 19th century. It was originally built as part of the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR) project, which connected Hyderabad to Vijayawada. During British rule, the station was crucial in transporting coal, limestone, and other minerals from nearby mines. After India’s independence, the station continued to grow, with the introduction of new trains and improved facilities.
Upgrades and Present Status
The South Central Railway (SCR) is modernizing the station by adding air-conditioned waiting rooms, escalators, and better passenger facilities. The project is being carried out at an estimated cost of ₹25.41 crore.
A senior officer from SCR provided an update on the progress, stating that work began last year and is moving at a fast pace. Several key developments have already been completed, including:
– Fabrication, erection, and sheeting of a 12-meter-wide gangway
– Construction of the general waiting hall
– False ceiling and flooring for retiring rooms
– Completion of the temporary booking office
– Erection of columns and purlins for platform shelters (15 spans on PF-1 and 7 spans on PF-2)
So far, over 45% of the work has been completed.
Ongoing Work
Currently, the fabrication and erection of 12-meter-wide foot-over bridge (FOB) ramps are in progress. Work is also underway for the foundation, fabrication, and installation of lifts and escalators. Additionally, wall plastering for the AC lounge and gutter fixing for platform shelters are ongoing.
With rapid progress, Khammam railway station is set to become a modern and convenient transit point for thousands of passengers and freight operations.
