Hyderabad Airport Upgrades Landing System for Better Safety and Efficiency

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has upgraded its primary runway with a new Category II Instrument Landing System (ILS). This is a significant improvement over the previous Category I system. The new system helps aircraft land safely even in low visibility conditions, such as during fog. This upgrade will improve flight operations, reducing delays and disruptions caused by bad weather.

The Category II ILS provides precise guidance to pilots using advanced radio signals and runway lighting. With this system, aircraft can land with a visibility as low as 300 meters Runway Visual Range (RVR). This is a major improvement from the earlier Category I system, which required better visibility. As a result, the airport will be more reliable during foggy weather, lowering the chances of flight cancellations and delays.

In addition to this, RGIA’s second runway has also been approved for an upgrade to Category I status by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This means aircraft can land safely even when visibility is as low as 550 meters RVR. This upgrade will provide additional support in case the primary runway is unavailable, ensuring smoother operations.

Pradeep Panicker, CEO of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, commented on the improvements. He stated that these advanced systems mark an important step in the airport’s technological development. He also emphasized that the upgrades enhance safety and improve overall airport operations.

The upgrades meet international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and have received all necessary approvals from the DGCA. This ensures that RGIA continues to follow global safety regulations. The new landing system is expected to make flight operations more reliable, improve the passenger experience by reducing delays, and strengthen Hyderabad’s airport as a major hub for domestic and international flights.

With these improvements, RGIA is now better prepared to handle weather-related challenges, offering a safer and more efficient travel experience for passengers.
