The historic Secunderabad Railway Station in Hyderabad, which is 151 years old, is undergoing a major transformation. This station, originally built in 1874 during British rule by the Nizam of Hyderabad, is being modernized into a world-class transport hub. The redevelopment, costing around Rs 700 crore, aims to improve passenger facilities while keeping the station’s heritage intact.

Secunderabad Railway Station was once the main station of the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railway until 1916. Its grand architecture reflected the elegance of the Nizam’s era. Indian Railways took control of the station in 1951, and it has since become one of South India’s busiest railway stations. Every year, around 20 million passengers use the station, generating an annual revenue of Rs 500 crore.

The redevelopment project focuses on making travel more convenient and efficient. Features such as a sky concourse, travelators, high-speed lifts, and escalators will ensure smoother movement for passengers. To reduce congestion, the station will have separate arrival and departure terminals with designated drop-off and pick-up points. There will also be multi-level and underground parking facilities to accommodate more vehicles.

In addition to transport improvements, the station will include retail shops, cafeterias, and recreational areas, making it a more vibrant space. A 5000 kW solar power plant will also be installed to support green energy initiatives.

Work on the station’s revamp began last year. Recently, the demolition of the old main station building started in phases, ensuring that passengers are not disturbed. A temporary booking office has been set up on the north side to manage ticketing during the transition. Meanwhile, construction of a multi-level parking facility is also in progress.

On the south side of the station, expansion work is advancing quickly, with about 40% of the work already completed. The columns up to the second floor are finished, and the first-floor slab shuttering work is underway.

One of the most awaited features is the air concourse, which will help reduce crowding on platforms by providing easy movement across the station. Excavation work for the concourse, travelators, and platform covers is ongoing. Out of the 66 foundations needed for the air concourse, 34 have already been completed.

The modernized Secunderabad Railway Station is expected to be ready by December 2025, bringing a new era of convenience and efficiency for passengers while preserving its rich heritage.
