Hyderabad: Sankranti Celebrations Bring Joy at Sphoorthy Engineering College
Sphoorthy Engineering College in Nadergul, Hyderabad, recently hosted the Makara-Mahotsav or Sankranti Sambaralu, a vibrant festival celebrating Indian culture, traditions, and creativity. The event brought the college community together in the spirit of Sankranti, marked by enthusiasm and grandeur.
The festival featured various engaging activities, including stalls for food, games, mehndi, and fancy items. Students also participated in competitions such as a Pongal cook-a-thon, rangoli designing, and a traditional craft challenge. Many participants used authentic materials, some sourced from home, adding a nostalgic touch to the celebrations. Principal Dr. Giridhar Akula welcomed everyone, emphasizing the importance of traditions in fostering unity and cultural identity. Secretary and Correspondent Sri S. Jagan Mohan Reddy highlighted the need to preserve cultural values in the face of modernity.
The colorful rangoli designs and mehndi art created by students captivated the audience, while the food stalls offered a variety of delicious treats, adding to the festive atmosphere. The college management appreciated the enthusiastic participation and rewarded winners of the competitions with cash prizes.
National Youth Day Celebrated Alongside Sankranti Festivities
The event also commemorated National Youth Day 2025, coinciding with the 163rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The celebration began with College Secretary Sri S. Jagan Mohan Reddy garlanding a statue of Swami Vivekananda on the college premises. Principal Dr. Akula Giridhar, department heads, faculty, and students paid floral tributes and reflected on Vivekananda’s inspiring life and teachings.
During his speech, Sri S. Jagan Mohan Reddy described Swami Vivekananda as a role model and encouraged everyone to embody his ideals. He urged students to have faith in themselves and strive for success, taking inspiration from Vivekananda’s impactful but short life of just 39 years.
Principal Dr. Giridhar Akula stressed the importance of self-discipline, responsibility, and spiritual growth among youth. He encouraged students to actively contribute to nation-building, social progress, and global peace.

The event concluded with a pledge taken by all students, reaffirming their commitment to the values of National Youth Day. The pledge reminded everyone that youth are not just the future but also the present, urging them to continue inspiring, innovating, and contributing positively to society.
