Congress Protests Demand JPC on Adani Issue in Hyderabad
The Congress party, led by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, organized a protest rally in front of Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The rally, called ‘Chalo Raj Bhavan,’ highlighted allegations made by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Indian businessman Gautam Adani. The SEC accused Adani of bribing public officials in India, a claim that Congress says has harmed the country’s reputation.
Revanth Reddy accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of protecting Gautam Adani despite the allegations. He stated that the Congress government in Telangana is ready to pass a resolution in the state Assembly to demand the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the Adani issue. However, he added that this would require support from the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
The Chief Minister reiterated that both Congress and the INDI (Indian National Developmental Inclusive) Alliance have been calling for a JPC investigation into the matter. He criticized the Prime Minister for allegedly pressuring the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman to avoid a parliamentary debate or the formation of a JPC. “Adani and PM Modi have brought disgrace to the country,” Reddy said.
Reddy explained that Congress leaders had to leave the Assembly and resort to protests such as the rally and a padayatra (foot march) as per the instructions of senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. He questioned Modi’s ties with Adani and demanded transparency, warning that the party is prepared to escalate the protests by organizing a demonstration in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan if the JPC is not formed.
The Chief Minister went on to say that Modi has two choices: either send Adani to Tihar jail in India or allow him to face legal consequences abroad. He criticized the BRS for mocking Congress’s participation in the protest and accused them of remaining silent on the Adani issue to avoid conflicts with the BJP. According to Reddy, the BRS has “surrendered” to the BJP to escape potential arrests.
The protest marks another chapter in Congress’s efforts to hold the central government accountable regarding allegations against Gautam Adani and the Modi government’s perceived inaction.
