Hyderabad Metro Phase-II Construction to Begin in January 2025

Hyderabad, November 26, 2024 – The Hyderabad Metro Rail is gearing up for its Phase-II expansion, with construction work set to start in January 2025. The initial focus will be on the Old City area, extending the metro line from the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta. This development is expected to improve connectivity in one of the city’s busiest and most densely populated regions.

The Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML), a collaboration between the Telangana state government and the Central government, will oversee the project. N.V.S. Reddy, HAML’s Managing Director, confirmed that preparations are underway, with the ground-breaking ceremony scheduled for early January.

    Pre-Construction Activities and Demolition Work

Preparation for the metro expansion will begin with property demolitions along the proposed route in the final week of December 2024. These properties have been acquired under the Land Acquisition Act. Simultaneously, geo-technical studies will be conducted to assess the land conditions. To ensure safety and minimize disruptions, roads will be barricaded during the construction period.

While central government approval for all five corridors of Phase-II is still pending, HAML is moving forward with preliminary work on the MGBS to Chandrayangutta stretch. The entire Phase-II project will span 76.4 kilometers, include 54 stations, and cost an estimated ₹24,269 crore.

Minimal Private Land Acquisition, Focus on Old City

Most of the land needed for Phase-II construction will be government-owned, reducing the need for private land acquisition. However, the Old City stretch will require some private properties. Landowners in the area are being compensated at ₹65,000 per square yard.

N.V.S. Reddy has assured that none of the 106 religious and heritage structures in the Old City will be affected. Advanced engineering solutions are being developed to avoid disturbing these culturally significant landmarks. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is closely monitoring the project to ensure timely completion within the four-year timeline.

Phase-II of the metro will feature elevated viaducts, except for a 1.6-kilometer stretch inside Shamshabad International Airport, which will be constructed at ground level. To speed up construction, modern techniques such as double ‘U’-shaped girders will be used.

Here are the five corridors of Phase-II along with their estimated costs:

Corridor 4: Nagole to Shamshabad RGIA (36.8 km) – ₹11,226 crore
Corridor 5: Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis (11.6 km) – ₹4,318 crore
Corridor 6: MGBS to Chandrayangutta (7.5 km) – ₹2,741 crore
Corridor 7: Miyapur to Patancheru (13.4 km) – ₹4,107 crore
Corridor 8: LB Nagar to Hayat Nagar (7.1 km) – ₹1,877 crore

    Airport Connectivity and Improved Accessibility

A key highlight of Phase-II is the Airport Corridor (Corridor 4), which will connect Shamshabad International Airport to the metro network. The route will be accessible from three existing metro lines, providing a seamless travel experience for commuters.

Key metro hubs such as Nagole and LB Nagar will act as transfer points for passengers heading to the airport. A twin station at Nagole will allow easy transfers from the Blue Line. Passengers on the Green Line can access the airport corridor via Chandrayangutta, while those on the Red Line can connect from MGBS or LB Nagar.

Additionally, HAML is working with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on a double-decker flyover-cum-metro rail project for the Miyapur-Madinaguda stretch. This initiative is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and integrating road and metro networks.

    Transforming Hyderabad’s Public Transportation

The completion of Phase-II will expand Hyderabad’s metro network by over 76 kilometers, adding 54 new stations. This extension will ease traffic congestion, boost urban infrastructure, and provide greater convenience for daily commuters.

With construction slated to begin in early 2025, the Hyderabad Metro Rail is set to play a pivotal role in urban development, benefiting thousands of commuters and supporting businesses along its corridors. This ambitious project reflects the city’s commitment to building a modern, efficient public transportation system for its growing population.
