Hyderabad: The Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET) marked its 67th annual day on Sunday with a series of events and celebrations.
The director general of the institute, Sharad Kumar Srivastava, presented the annual report during the event. He highlighted the institute’s significant achievements this year, including the swift organization of 11 special training programs on railway signalling and the Kavach safety system. These programs trained 877 chief loco inspectors in a remarkably short time.
Earlier in the day, a technical workshop was held focusing on modern technologies such as digital twins, Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems, futuristic telecom technologies, and safety assessment protocols. Industry experts, academics, and representatives from zonal railways participated as speakers. Additionally, exhibition stalls were set up to showcase signalling and telecommunication products, as well as upcoming advancements in these fields. Senior officers from various zonal railways and the railway board attended the workshop and exhibitions.
Dr. Radha Krishna Ganti, a professor of electrical engineering at IIT Madras, spoke during the event and stressed the importance of involving engineering students in railway signalling technologies to boost capacity. He also shared insights into the development of indigenous telecom standards, 5G technologies, and government-led initiatives. Dr. Ganti encouraged IRISET to adopt AI tools and platforms like ChatGPT to enhance the learning experience for future generations.
Arun Kumar Jain, general manager of South Central Railway (SCR), highlighted the need for upgrading training programs. He emphasized that improved training will play a critical role in enhancing productivity and ensuring greater safety in train operations.
