NHRC Takes Notice of Police Harassment Allegations in Lagacharla Village
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of complaints from residents of Lagacharla village in Hyderabad. The villagers have accused the police of harassment, physical abuse, and filing false criminal charges against them.
The NHRC stated that if the complaints are true, they point to a serious violation of human rights. In response, the commission has sent notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police, asking for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The allegations stem from a protest by villagers against the State’s land acquisition for a proposed “Pharma Village,” which they claim was done without following proper procedures. Many of the victims reportedly belong to SC, ST, and OBC communities.
According to the complaints, at least 12 victims approached the NHRC, seeking its help to prevent starvation and further harassment. The commission has requested specific details, including the status of FIRs, the number of people in judicial custody, and the situation of villagers who are allegedly hiding in forest areas without access to basic necessities. It has also asked for information on whether medical examinations and care were provided to injured villagers, particularly women.
Given the seriousness of the claims, the NHRC has decided to send a joint team of its law and investigation officers to conduct an on-the-spot inquiry. The team has been tasked with submitting a report within one week.
