Hyderabad: A four-storey building constructed illegally in a lake was demolished with a controlled explosion on Thursday. The building was located inside Malkapur Peddacheruvu lake, which led authorities to take swift action.
The building was situated in the Full Tank Level (FTL) area of Malkapur Peddacheruvu in Kondapur mandal, Sangareddy district, about 60 kilometers from Hyderabad. Villagers had complained to the authorities, leading revenue and other department officials to demolish the structure using explosives.
Officials revealed that a resident from Secunderabad had built the structure 12 years ago. The owner had even constructed steps from the lake’s banks to access the building and would visit the location with his family on weekends. A staircase was also built to allow access without stepping into the lake waters.
Tahsildar Anita explained that the lake covers a Full Tank Level area of 3.1 acres, and the illegal building, which occupied 250 square yards, was located within this area. The owner had been issued a notice before the demolition took place.
Since no vehicles could reach the building located in the middle of the lake, officials decided to use explosives to carry out the demolition. The police ensured tight security during the process to prevent any untoward incidents.
This marked the first time authorities used explosives to demolish illegal structures in an effort to reclaim encroached land.
Unfortunately, debris from the blast flew in different directions, injuring two individuals who were present at the site. They were immediately taken to a local government hospital for medical treatment.
