Hyderabad: The government agency HYDRA has been marking houses near the Musi River for demolition, causing worry among locals. These homes, located along the banks of the river, are at risk of being demolished, and the residents are preparing for the worst as news spreads that thousands of houses will be affected.
Many residents are doubtful about the government’s promise to provide alternate housing solutions. They fear that the current government, which is struggling financially, may not be able to keep its word. Some 10,000 families are supposed to be rehoused, but many people do not believe this will happen.
K Raju, a resident of Shankar Nagar, expressed his frustration. He explained that each time the government changes, they focus on the Musi River, spending large amounts of money with little to show for it. The authorities have marked homes, particularly those built on the riverbed, with a large “M” in a circle. This has caused panic, and many residents are now receiving videos on their phones warning that their homes will soon be demolished.
A woman from Musa Nagar, who has lived in the area for over 20 years, expressed her concerns. She mentioned hearing rumors that 11,000 houses will be torn down and questioned where her family would go if no alternative housing is provided.
On September 14, Revanth, a government official, mentioned that he was working with the AIMIM party to develop the Musi River area. He added that the government is open to suggestions and is making efforts to relocate residents by offering them 2BHK homes as part of the rehabilitation process.
While some residents, particularly those living in makeshift shacks, are happy about the possibility of getting new 2BHK homes, others are skeptical. In Chaderghat, some people have even begun removing the markings on their homes, fearing the arrival of bulldozers at any moment. They also questioned news reports that claimed notices had been served to those living in the riverbed.
Syed Bilal, a representative of the Human Rights Forum and NAPM (National Alliance of People’s Movement), voiced strong concerns. He stated that instead of having a broader discussion on the issue, the Congress government has already demolished homes elsewhere without warning. Bilal stated that NAPM is considering reaching out to Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge and warned that if the government proceeds without proper rehabilitation plans, it could lose the support of many voters.
HYDRA Commissioner A V Ranganath responded to questions about when the demolitions would begin. He clarified that he is still waiting for instructions from the relevant authorities and will act as soon as they make a formal request.
