Hyderabad: BJP MP and national president of the party’s OBC Morcha, Dr. K Laxman, expressed his support for the Union Cabinet’s decision to conduct simultaneous elections for the Parliament, state assemblies, and later for local bodies. He questioned why Congress is opposing this move.

Dr. Laxman congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet for taking this important step. He also questioned why Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is against a decision that Congress itself had supported earlier. According to Dr. Laxman, Congress seems to be afraid and hesitant about the idea of holding Jamili (simultaneous) elections.

He explained that simultaneous elections were held in India from 1951 to 1967. However, this practice was disrupted when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi decided to hold early elections before the scheduled time for political reasons. Additionally, the frequent use of Article 356 to suspend state governments run by opposition parties further contributed to the breakdown of the Jamili election system.

Dr. Laxman also recalled that both the Law Commission in 1999 and a Parliamentary Committee in 2005 emphasized the importance of holding elections for Assemblies and Parliament at the same time.
