Hyderabad: The construction of a new booking office and platform is currently underway at Dayanand Nagar railway station, which is part of the Safilguda—Moula Ali chord line. This project, once completed, will allow the Hyderabad Division of South Central Railway to divert some express trains through Dayanand Nagar.
In many large cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, there are separate tracks for suburban trains. However, in Hyderabad, there isn’t enough space to add even one more track. Because of this, all trains, including goods and superfast trains, have to use the same tracks. The Hyderabad and Secunderabad divisions only have double lines, and there’s no room to add more tracks. Due to this limitation, the Railways have to find other routes for some trains or change their starting and ending stations to nearby locations. As part of this effort, the Hyderabad division has decided to divert some trains coming from Nizamabad and heading toward Kazipet or Nalgonda through Dayanand Nagar. To support this plan, a new booking office and platform are being built at Dayanand Nagar.
A senior railway officer explained that the construction of the new station started in March. The work currently includes building a booking office and a foot-over bridge that will connect the new platform to the existing one. There are already two platforms at the station, and an additional platform is being added. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once the new booking office and platform towards Radhakrishna Nagar, Malkajgiri, are finished, 10 pairs of trains from Nalgonda/Kazipet will be diverted through Dayanand Nagar. This will help avoid Secunderabad station, which usually requires time for engine reversal, thereby reducing congestion, saving about an hour of travel time, and ensuring smoother operations for other superfast trains.
Meanwhile, members of the Suburban Train Travellers Association have requested Railway officials to also consider stopping all express trains, currently halting at Dayanand Nagar, at Charlapally station. This would allow passengers to easily switch to other trains at Charlapally, which could significantly improve train punctuality in the Hyderabad division.
