Hyderabad: The State government has launched a new project to map properties in 37 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) using advanced geospatial technologies. This effort aims to streamline property tax collection and prevent encroachments. The project has already started in the West Zone of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area.

The government has allocated over Rs 1,471 crore for this project. The plan is to create detailed and accurate maps of all properties and utilities. These maps will integrate data from various departments, offering a unified view of the urban landscape.

A senior official explained that the goal is to prepare GIS base maps for the 37 ULBs using high-resolution satellite imagery. This will assist in strategic planning, resource utilization, and everyday management on a 1:1000 scale.

The task of preparing the GIS base map for the 37 ULBs has been given to M/s CED, Thiruvananthapuram. The agency has 18 months to complete the project, with an additional two years for operation and maintenance. This initiative is expected to improve urban planning, service delivery, and resource management in the city.

Officials mentioned that a unique identification number (UIN) will be created for each property. This will help GHMC deliver services like door-to-door garbage collection, emergency management, and community engagement more effectively. The UIN will also be used by other departments like HMWS&SB and TSSPDCL for quicker and more coordinated services.

Surveyors will start visiting homes to collect data in about a month. A public web portal will also be available for citizens to link their properties to the GIS map. This will allow GHMC to get input, understand preferences, and involve citizens in decision-making processes related to urban development and public utilities. All collected data will be kept confidential and used solely to improve urban management and service delivery.
