The Mayors of Kanpur, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh are visiting Hyderabad. They are here to learn about how the city handles urban floods and disaster management. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is sharing their methods and strategies.
Mayors Manglesh Kumar from Gorakhpur, Pramila Pandey from Kanpur, Sushma Kharakwal from Lucknow, and Girish Pati Tripathi from Ayodhya arrived on Wednesday. They are spending two days studying the techniques used by GHMC, especially the Nala Development Programme. Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and Deputy Mayor Mothe Srilatha Shobhan Reddy welcomed them at the GHMC head office.
Mayor Vijayalakshmi explained various schemes and best practices implemented by GHMC. She highlighted that a standing committee meets every Wednesday, chaired by the Mayor, with members, the GHMC commissioner, and other officials participating.
Vijayalakshmi emphasized that officials stay alert, especially during the monsoon season, to ensure people don’t face any problems. The situation in the 150 divisions under GHMC is monitored from the command control room, and necessary actions are taken promptly.
She also detailed the technical methods used in urban flood management through the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP). Programs by the Disaster Response Force (DRF) for managing disasters were also explained.
Further, SNDP Chief Engineer Koteswara Rao and HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath gave a PowerPoint presentation on the work done by the DRF. OSD Anuradha talked about Hyderabad’s weather conditions, how the control room monitors the monsoon emergency teams, provides weather updates, alerts teams and people, and records rainfall and floods. Special attention is given to low-lying areas during heavy rains.
