In Telangana, there seems to be a decrease in the number of students moving from primary to higher education. Reports like UDISE Plus-2021-22, All India Survey on Higher Education 2021-22, and Economic Survey-2022-23 show a decline in the percentage of students transitioning from one level to another.

The drop in transition is mainly due to a significant decrease in the number of boys moving to the next class. For example, at the elementary level (Classes I to VII), boys’ enrollment ratio was 110.3% and girls’ ratio was 110.1%, making the total enrollment ratio 110.2%. However, as students progress to higher levels, the numbers decrease significantly.

At the secondary level, boys’ enrollment was 93.6% and girls’ was 94.5%, totaling 94.1%. Moving to senior secondary levels, boys’ enrollment dropped to 63.1% and girls’ to 66.7%, with a total transition rate of 64.8%.

In Telangana, only 39.1% of students from senior secondary levels enter higher education, which is above the national average. But there has been a decline in the number of boys (25.7%) and girls (25.8%) entering higher education, affecting overall enrollment numbers.

The college density index in Telangana also shows fluctuations, with a decline from 51% in 2017-18 to 52% in 2021-22. The Union Education Ministry aims to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education to 50% by 2030-35.
