Former MLC and advocate N Ramachandra Rao spoke out against the Emergency, calling it a dark day for democracy in India. He stated that it violated fundamental rights and tried to alter the Constitution’s basic structure.
Rao made these comments during a media address following a protest by advocates at the Telangana State High Court marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. He expressed gratitude to the advocates for their support in observing the day as part of the BJP’s Anti-Emergency Day nationwide program.
According to Rao, the Emergency was declared by the Congress government led by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to prolong elections for another year. He criticized the Congress party for repeatedly violating the Constitution during its long tenure and imposing President’s Rule while disregarding elected State governments. In contrast, Rao praised the BJP for upholding and respecting the Constitution.
