The Cyberabad traffic police recently conducted a large-scale drunk driving test in their limits, booking 385 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. The special drive aimed to reduce drunk driving, especially in the IT corridor, and took place on a Saturday night.
This was the second weekend in a row that the Cyberabad police carried out this special drive. They detained drivers of 292 two-wheelers, 80 cars, 11 auto-rickshaws, and two heavy vehicles at various locations within Cyberabad limits.
Out of the total cases booked, 182 motorists were caught in the IT corridor alone, with four recording a BAC level of 550 mg/100 ml. The police mentioned that all those caught would be taken to court for further action.
During a similar drive on June 15, the Cyberabad police caught over 349 people for drunk driving. They apprehended drivers of 253 two-wheelers, 16 three-wheelers, 74 four-wheelers, and six heavy vehicles during these checks.
The Cyberabad Joint Commissioner of Police Traffic, D Joel Davis, highlighted that drunk and unauthorised driving are significant causes of road accidents and fatalities in the area. To combat this issue, the police have intensified measures against offenders and are also prosecuting individuals who knowingly allow or accompany drunk drivers. Those who cause accidents resulting in fatalities while driving under the influence will face arrest and jail time under Section 304, Part II of the IPC.
