The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is working on getting rid of garbage in the city in a new way by raising awareness among citizens. GHMC staff have been writing messages to urge people not to dump garbage on roads, parks, localities, or near eateries. This initiative has not only brought attention to the issue but has also created a sense of community responsibility for keeping the area clean.

The GHMC has identified over 3,000 garbage-prone spots and has successfully cleaned up around 500 of them. To strengthen their efforts, GHMC is implementing a weekly ‘basti action plan’ to ensure 100% door-to-door collection of solid waste and to eliminate remaining garbage spots. The message to citizens includes reminders like ‘do not litter on roads,’ ‘use dustbins for waste,’ and ‘handover waste to Swachh Autos,’ along with a helpline number.

In addition to these efforts, local residents are being engaged with refreshments and recreational activities at identified garbage-prone points. Residents are also encouraged to participate in keeping the city clean by posting messages and running campaigns for a garbage-free Hyderabad. The weekly action plan involves meetings in basti areas, involving self-help groups, auto drivers, and members of sanitation workers’ teams.

Over 2,000 awareness meetings have been held for eliminating garbage-prone spots, and SHG workers have been recognized for their contributions. The weekly action plan activities include meetings, identification of households for waste collection, rallies, motivational programs, Rangoli competitions, Town Vending Committee Meetings, and weekend pledges and resolutions.
