The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started the ‘Shallow Aquifer Recharge Project’ to address issues like declining groundwater levels, drying borewells, and flooding streets in Hyderabad. An awareness programme was held in Habsiguda as part of this initiative.

GHMC officials, along with representatives from the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and ‘The Rainwater Project’ team, explained the project details to local residents at Kakatiya Nagar Colony Park in Habsiguda. The project falls under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, with NIUA overseeing its implementation.

The park chosen for the project has a large watershed area and storage capacity, with the goal of recharging groundwater and reducing urban flooding. Dr. Sunanda Rani and Kalpana provided insights into the project’s purpose and technical interventions during the awareness programme.

Apart from Kakatiya Park, similar initiatives have been implemented at four other parks in Hyderabad. The project involves drilling shallow water injection borewells and channeling water through recharge pits to recharge underground layers and raise water tables.

To support water conservation efforts, GHMC and HMWS&SB conducted training for skilled plumbers and masons on rooftop rainwater harvesting systems. This training ensures that individuals can easily access skilled labor for installing these systems.

Officials from GHMC, NIUA, and ‘The Rainwater Project’ team were present at the programme in Habsiguda to educate residents about the ‘Shallow Aquifer Recharge Project’ and its benefits.
