    On May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity, Hyderabad celebrates its diverse range of plant and animal life. As the only city in India to have assessed its City Biodiversity Index (CBI) twice in the past decade, Hyderabad demonstrates its commitment to protecting biodiversity.

    The latest CBI shows significant improvement in Hyderabad’s biodiversity score, indicating the city’s strong focus on conservation efforts. The assessment covers native biodiversity, ecosystem services, and biodiversity governance, providing a comprehensive overview of the city’s ecological health.

    Developed with help from local experts and organizations, Hyderabad’s CBI highlights the variety of flora and fauna thriving in the city’s tropical climate. Initiatives like ‘Haritha Haram’ and conservation efforts have enhanced urban biodiversity, supporting India’s National Biodiversity Action Plan goals.

    Hyderabad is home to a wide range of species, including 315 bird species, 1,665 plant species, 141 butterfly species, 53 reptile species, and 64 fish species. The city’s natural asset map showcases its diverse ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity protection in urban areas.
