The Election Commission of India (ECI) has summoned Chief Secretary KS Jawahar Reddy and Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta from Andhra Pradesh regarding post-poll violence. An emergency meeting was held with Intelligence ADG Kumar Vishwajeet to discuss the situation.
The Chief Secretary and DGP will be traveling to New Delhi on Thursday to explain the current state of affairs in the State. The ECI is seeking an explanation for the failure of law and order at the ground level, actions taken so far, and identifying the political parties responsible for the violence.
The ECI emphasized that violence has no place in democracy and expressed serious concern over media reports of post-poll violence in Andhra Pradesh. The Model Code of Conduct is still in effect, and the Commission directed officials to ensure that violence does not recur.
The Chief Secretary and DGP have been asked to personally appear in New Delhi on Thursday to address issues such as reasons for administrative failures, accountability for not preventing violence, and measures taken to address any patterns in post-poll violence.
