Congress is trying to end the family legacy of former MLA G Sayanna in the by-election for the Secunderabad Cantonment segment. The Congress candidate N Sri Ganesh is using different strategies to win the election and counter the sympathy wave for Sayanna’s daughter, Lasya Nivedita, who is contesting from BRS.

The by-election was called after BRS MLA G Lasya Nanditha passed away in an accident in February. Both Congress and BRS are hoping to capitalize on sympathy from voters, with BRS choosing Lasya Nivedita, the daughter of former BRS leader G Sayanna, who represented the area multiple times. Congress has nominated N Sri Ganesh, banking on his reputation.

Both candidates have started campaigning vigorously for this crucial bypoll. Sri Ganesh has been meeting residents and community leaders, promising better infrastructure and implementing pending projects like the 2-BHK scheme. However, political analysts believe that sympathy alone may not sway voters this time, as locals are looking for development and change.

The Secunderabad Cantonment seat has been held by the Sayanna family since 1994, except for a brief period in 2009 when Congress won. Despite being a TDP stronghold, Sayanna won on TDP and BRS tickets in previous elections. In the 2023 assembly polls, BRS had a vote share of over 47%, followed by BJP with over 33% and Congress with around 17%.

Congress party members are optimistic about their chances in this bypoll, citing ongoing development projects initiated by the party in power. They believe that the momentum is in their favor this time.
