PETA in India issued an advisory on Sunday about caring for animals in hot weather. They stressed the importance of protecting pets and community animals from heat stress and dehydration.

Dogs should be kept indoors during hot weather because they regulate their body temperature through panting and sweating from their footpads. Leaving dogs in parked cars, even for a short time, can be dangerous and lead to heatstroke or even death. Water bowls should be placed in neighborhoods and the water should be changed frequently. Providing water to birds and allowing breaks for animals used for work are also important to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Animal-cart drivers should give their animals rest periods during hot afternoons and help them cool down with water sprays. It’s crucial to help animals avoid heatstroke and dehydration as temperatures rise, according to a PETA representative.

If you see an animal in distress, contact a veterinarian or animal welfare organization immediately and give the animal water for immediate relief. You can also reach out to PETA India’s emergency response team at 9820122602 for assistance.
