VIMUKTHI, a forum of trafficking survivors and victims of commercial sexual exploitation in Andhra Pradesh, is urging political parties to address their issues in the upcoming 2024 elections. These survivors face stigma and discrimination and lack access to rehabilitation services and victim compensation. As the elections approach, they want their demands included in party manifestos.

According to VIMUKTHI president Apurva, there are a large number of women in prostitution in Andhra Pradesh, with many entering due to lack of options or coercion. The government has failed to provide adequate support to these survivors. Pushpa, the Secretary of VIMUKTHI, highlighted the challenges faced by women in prostitution and their children, emphasizing the need for dignity and support.

The forum has outlined nine demands for political parties to include in their manifestos, such as creating a state-specific policy for rehabilitation, providing basic needs and services, and ensuring access to victim compensation. They also call for stronger legislation against trafficking and greater involvement of anti-trafficking units in handling cases.

VIMUKTHI is determined to vote for parties that prioritize their issues and incorporate their demands into their election manifestos. They believe that by advocating for these changes, they can improve the lives of trafficking survivors and victims of commercial sexual exploitation in Andhra Pradesh.
