Civil Supplies and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy of Telangana’s Congress Government stated that they will not implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) or the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. He made this announcement at an Iftar party in Kodad, emphasizing the importance of democracy and secularism being reinstated in Telangana under the Congress party.
Reddy highlighted the challenges faced by minorities during the previous regime, where promises like 12% Muslim reservation were not honored. He criticized the previous government for discrimination against minorities and accused the current Chief Minister KCR of indirectly supporting BJP and RSS in the state.
The minister asserted that only the Congress party can uphold secularism and democracy in India and effectively combat the BJP at the national level. He warned about the potential consequences of BJP’s return to power, especially for minority communities like Muslims, with the implementation of CAA already underway and NRC and NPR likely to follow.
Reddy urged people to support Congress to safeguard secularism in the country, emphasizing the importance of who becomes the next Prime Minister. He expressed distrust towards regional parties like BRS and TDP, suggesting that they may align with BJP for personal gain, as seen in past instances.
The Congress party has already initiated welfare schemes for minorities in Telangana, with plans to increase the budget for minority welfare and introduce a sub-plan after the Lok Sabha elections. Reddy also mentioned arrangements made for Ramzan, allowing shops to stay open late and government employees to leave early for Iftar, with Eid-ul-Fitr approaching in the next 7-8 days.
