Four agricultural products from Telangana State are being considered for the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The GI tag is a recognition and protection for unique products and their heritage. The process of obtaining the GI tag for these products is being expedited from three years to one year due to initiatives such as ‘One District One Product’ and the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign launched by the Central government.

Telangana currently has only 17 registered GI products, lagging behind other South Indian states. Some of the advantages of having a GI tag include legal protection, prevention of unauthorized use by others, and boosting exports.

The products under consideration for the GI tag include Balanagar Custard Apple, Kollapur Mango, Nizamabad Turmeric, Hyderabad Lac Bangles, Warangal Chapata Chilli, Nalgonda Pickling Oriental Melon, and Siddipet Batik paintings. The state already has registered GI products such as Hyderabad Haleem, Pochampally Ikat, Telia Rumal, Narayanpet Handloom Sarees, and more.

Having a GI tag plays a significant role in promoting GI tourism, expanding market opportunities, and increasing the visibility of these products globally. It also helps in preserving fading art forms and rejuvenating the work of artisans and craftsmen.

However, there are challenges that need to be addressed for GI products, such as traceability, packaging, and perishability. The awareness among producers and consumers about GI products is currently lacking, and mass campaigning and awareness efforts are needed to encourage people to purchase these products.

Overall, obtaining the GI tag for agricultural products from Telangana will provide recognition and protection to these unique products and contribute to their growth and market presence.
