Upset over the poor quality of food in their hostel mess, post-graduate students from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad staged a protest on Thursday. They claimed that for two months, the food they were served contained insects, glass pieces, and plastic particles. Despite numerous complaints, the situation did not improve, and many students fell ill as a result. Additionally, the students were against a new rule that required girls to return to the hostel by 6 pm.
One student named Rajesh expressed his frustration, stating that they had been dealing with this issue for a long time and that the authorities had not taken any action. He described the presence of glass pieces and insects in their meals, which posed a threat to their health. Some students even experienced diarrhea after unknowingly consuming contaminated food.
A few female students raised concerns about their inability to comply with the 6 pm curfew due to their part-time jobs, tuitions, internships, and other commitments. They suggested that lifting this restriction would be more suitable for their circumstances.
Vamshi, a second-year MBA student, shared that there had been multiple incidents where students discovered dead insects or glass pieces in their meals. Despite raising the issue with the authorities on several occasions, no effective measures were taken. Frustrated by this lack of action, the students decided to protest.
