The Tabernacles is a singing ensemble that has been glorifying God through music for 56 years. It was started in 1967 by Kenneth V Gibson and has remained a unique presence in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and India as a whole. After Kenneth’s passing, the group is now led by Zubin Gibson and continues its tradition of annual concerts.

Zubin Gibson explains that over the years, The Tabernacles has evolved its repertoire and singing quality while maintaining a devotion to Western classical music. They perform a variety of pieces, ranging from weighty compositions by famous maestros to lighter classical selections. The group’s performances are enhanced by their chamber orchestra, which includes talented young musicians on violin, cello, and double bass.

The Tabernacles host their annual Christmas concert in December, followed by the Passion concert in March. They have recently introduced the Hymn Concert in August and plan to continue this tradition. As they prepare for their Christmas performances, The Tabernacles collaborated with the Genesis Chamber Orchestra for a final rehearsal, wearing T-shirts with the slogan ‘Peace on Earth’ to symbolize their shared aspiration for global tranquility.

Zubin also highlights the impact of Western classical music in Hyderabad, particularly during the era of the Nizams. The Nizams were influential in promoting and supporting Western classical music, and the Chowmahalla Palace housed a dedicated music hall where renowned musicians performed. This legacy adds further prestige to The Tabernacles’ commitment to musical excellence.

The Tabernacles meet once a week for practice sessions, usually on Sundays. These sessions are essential for synchronizing their diverse schedules as many members are working professionals. As the concert date approaches, additional rehearsals are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays to ensure a polished performance.
