Officials in Hyderabad are preparing to repair the Medigadda barrage in the Kaleswaram project. The water in the barrage is being emptied to facilitate the repairs. On October 21, pillar number 20 of the seventh block of the Medigadda barrage collapsed, along with six other pillars. The Central Dam Safety Authority conducted an inspection and reported that the collapse occurred due to engineering failure and design defect.
Due to the potential danger to all Kaleswaram barrages, including Medigadda, storing water has been prohibited. As a precautionary measure, the gates of the Medigadda (Lakshmi) and Annaram (Saraswati) barrages have already been lifted and water has been released. Currently, the gates of the Sundilla (Parvati) barrage are also being lifted, leading to the release of water downstream. Approximately 23 TMC of water, which irrigates nearly 2 lakh acres of land, has been discharged into the sea. The repairs for the dam will take place after it has been completely emptied.
