The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Odisha due to a low pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal. The State government is preparing to handle any problems that may arise from the heavy rain.
The low pressure area is currently located northeast and east-central of the Bay of Bengal, but it is expected to move northwest towards north Odisha and West Bengal coasts in the next 48 hours. The IMD warns that this could result in inundation of low-lying areas, flash floods, and landslides.
The IMD explains that the low pressure area formed due to a cyclonic circulation over Myanmar and the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to become a well-marked low pressure area and continue moving northwestwards.
The State Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has sent a letter to district collectors, instructing them to be prepared for the heavy rainfall. They are asked to report any damage caused by thunderstorms, whirlwinds, hailstorms, or lightning immediately.
The Met office also warns of waterlogging, reduced visibility causing traffic congestion, and damage to roads and houses during the heavy rain. They advise farmers to postpone applying fertilizers and chemicals in their fields and keep their livestock safe.
In the past 24 hours, Odisha has recorded an average of 3.3 mm of rainfall, with Lamtaput in Koraput district receiving the highest amount at 59 mm. Gumma in Gajapati district received 55 mm of rainfall, while Korukunda in Malkangiri district reported 50 mm of rainfall.
