Agriculture Minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy expressed his sadness over the death of agri scientist Dr. M S Swaminathan, calling it a great loss for agriculture and the country. Reddy had recently met with Swaminathan in Chennai and praised the progress of the agriculture sector in Telangana. Swaminathan had expressed a desire to visit Telangana once he regained his health. The minister described Swaminathan as a soulmate to farmers and noted that he was the first recipient of the World Food Prize, which is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize. Swaminathan’s portrait is displayed in the capital of Iowa State in the US as recognition for his contributions to agriculture.
