The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has stated that dogs picked up for sterilization, immunization, and observation are being released in their respective areas. This is being done in accordance with the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. The MCD’s decision to pick up stray dogs in the city was challenged in court, but the writ petition was disposed of with directions for the MCD to follow the ABC Rules, which it was already obligated to do. The MCD has assured that the entire process is being carried out in compliance with the law.
The MCD has responded to objections and allegations regarding its handling of the dogs, calling them “against public spirit.” It urges everyone to avoid causing trouble and emphasizes its commitment to the welfare of the dogs. Animal activists have approached MCD officials and submitted a memorandum requesting that the stray dogs be returned to their territories after the G20 summit.
The controversy has also drawn criticism from the Congress party, which has called the detention of dogs an act of cruelty. They have shared a video showing stray dogs being pulled by their necks with a leash.
