The water flow in the Musi river is increasing, and this is causing concern for residents living along its banks. The authorities have opened the gates of the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs, releasing flood water into the river. This has led to traffic congestion at several bridges in Hyderabad, including Moosarambagh, Jiyaguda, and Chaderghat.
The river is receiving a large amount of water from upstream, so the flood gates of the reservoirs were opened to drain out the rainwater. People living in low-lying areas such as Malakpet, Kishanbagh, Jiyaguda, Puranapul, MGBS, Chaderghat, and Golnaka have been alerted to the situation.
As a precautionary measure, the Puranapul and Moosarambagh bridges have been closed. Traffic police have placed barricades to prevent vehicles from entering these bridges. The water levels in the river are being closely monitored by the police and civic authorities.
Residents are concerned about the rising water flow near the small bridge at Malakpet, as it indicates a risk of flooding in nearby areas. Over 200 families in Moosa Nagar and 500 families in Padma Nagar and Shanker Nagar have been put on alert. A community hall and an Islamic school in Malakpet are ready to be used as relief camps if necessary.
The recent construction works near Malakpet’s railway under bridge (RuB) are expected to ease congestion points. However, the effectiveness of the de-silting works done prior to the monsoon season will be tested as 45 bastis on the southern side face a risk on the Azampura side.
