Warangal: The historic stepwell in Shiva Nagar, also known as Metla Bavi or Anthasthulu Bavi, is going to be restored soon. The stepwell, which dates back to the Kakatiya dynasty, was in a neglected state until it was brought to the attention of the district collector in 2017. The restoration work began to uncover the 12×12 meter stepwell that was filled with mud and rubbish. Despite its historical significance, the stepwell was not listed as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Locals believe that the depth of the well is unknown and it never dries up. They also say that there is a secret tunnel connected to Fort Warangal, which was used by Queen Rudrama Devi’s entourage to access the stepwell. After receiving a tweet from a resident requesting the development of the stepwell, MA&UD Minister K T Rama Rao advised the district collector to take necessary steps for its restoration.

The district collector, along with the mayor and a conservation architect, visited the stepwell to discuss the development plans. The restoration work will begin with the de-silting of the stepwell. The collector has asked for a proposal from the technical team before starting the development works. Local heritage enthusiasts are pleased with these developments but have requested that the restoration maintains the heritage values of the stepwell. They have also asked for a park to be developed nearby.
