Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has called for political parties to discuss the practice of states offering free goods or services. He believes that the distribution of benefits can have negative consequences for economies and individuals’ finances. Dhankhar emphasized the need to create an environment that empowers individuals to use their skills and potential for development.

Dhankhar made these remarks at the 9th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association – India Region Conference in Udaipur. He pointed out the decline in capital expenditure, which hampers genuine development efforts.

The Vice President’s comments come amid an ongoing debate between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government and Opposition parties. The BJP has criticized state governments for offering concessions, such as cash benefits for unemployed farmers and free bus rides for women.

Dhankhar expressed concerns about the financial repercussions of these giveaways and the increasing disruptions in legislative bodies. As the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he lamented that these “temples of democracy” have become centers of disturbances. He urged lawmakers to prioritize the interests of the people over political divisions to prevent parliamentary and legislative bodies from becoming irrelevant.

He reminded legislators of the extensive freedom of speech provided by the Constitution, allowing them to express their opinions without facing legal repercussions.
