The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition filed by actor and former Tamil Nadu MLA S Ve Shekher regarding a Facebook post he shared in 2018 that allegedly contained derogatory remarks against women journalists. The court advised social media users to be cautious about the impact and reach of their posts. Shekher had appealed against the Madras High Court’s decision to dismiss his petition seeking the cancellation of criminal proceedings related to the post. The bench stated that if someone chooses to use social media, they should be prepared to face the consequences.

The High Court had noted that Shekher had published an abusive and vulgar comment on his Facebook account, leading to a complaint being filed against him. An FIR was registered, and additional private complaints were filed in different parts of Tamil Nadu. Shekher’s counsel argued that he was unaware of the message’s contents when he shared it and promptly removed it upon realizing its derogatory nature. He also issued an unconditional apology to the concerned women journalists and the media.

The High Court described the message forwarded by Shekher as despicable and highly derogatory towards the press in Tamil Nadu. It emphasized the rapid spread of social media messages and the need for individuals, especially public figures, to be responsible in their statements and forwards. The court emphasized that once a message is sent or forwarded on social media, it is like an arrow released from a bow and cannot be taken back.

In summary, the Supreme Court upheld the dismissal of Shekher’s petition and highlighted the importance of considering the impact and reach of social media posts. The High Court emphasized the responsibility of individuals, particularly those in influential positions, when using social media platforms.
