The South Zone police in Hyderabad have started a special drive to address substance abuse among young people in the Old City area. This initiative was prompted by AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi raising the issue during the monsoon session, and Minister KT Rama Rao’s subsequent assurance on August 6.
According to police officials, counseling sessions are being held for 50-100 young people in different police station areas. The police are urging parents to send their children to recommended drug de-addiction centers if they are identified as being at risk.
The drive is currently taking place in the South Zone, with counseling sessions being conducted at different police stations. The DCP South Zone is giving special attention to this issue and has ordered the drive to be carried out.
The police believe that addressing substance abuse is in the best interest of society. The TS Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TSNAB) under City Police Commissioner C V Anand is also involved in this effort. They emphasize the importance of taking addicted youth to de-addiction centers so they can receive proper treatment and reintegrate into society.
Mujtaba Hasan Askari from the Helping Hand Foundation (HHF) noted that many addicts are daily wage laborers. HHF staff, who run health centers in the Old City area, frequently come into contact with these addicts. Askari believes that simply counseling these youth is not enough and calls for increased focus from TSNAB.
