The Lok Sabha has passed a Bill that gives the President the responsibility of managing the IIMs. The President will have the power to audit their functioning, remove directors, and nominate a member in the selection committee. The Education Minister stated that the government is not taking away the academic accountability from the institutes, but only ensuring their management accountability. The Bill was passed by a voice vote in the Lower House, despite disruptions by opposition members. It amends the IIM Act of 2017 and grants the President powers to audit, order probes, and appoint or remove directors. The board of governors of each institute currently has 19 members, including representatives from the central and state governments.
