A team of cardiologists at Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, have introduced a groundbreaking procedure called the MitraClip procedure without surgery. This procedure was performed for the first time in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on an 87-year-old woman named Ms Leela Nair who had recurrent heart failures. Dr Ranga Reddy, an interventional cardiologist specializing in structural heart disease, led the team.

The unique double MitraClip procedure was done under the guidance of senior cardiologists Dr Manoj Agarwal and Dr PC Rath, as well as senior cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Alla Gopala Krishna Gokhale. It was performed to treat severe mitral valve regurgitation, which is when blood leaks backwards through the mitral valve.

Mitral valve regurgitation is a common heart disease affecting around 24 million people worldwide. It occurs when the valve between the left heart chambers fails to close properly, causing blood to leak backwards. The MitraClip procedure offers a non-surgical alternative to treat this condition, providing better outcomes for patients with severe mitral valve regurgitation.

The conventional treatment for this condition is minimal-invasive mitral valve surgery, but it can have high procedural complications for older or high-risk patients. The non-surgical MitraClip procedure is a safer and effective alternative for these patients.
